9 Ways to Increase Your Happiness
1 | Get outside. I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t love the feeling of the salty beach air, the smell of the forest, or the colors of a sunset. Nature is powerful and rejuvenating. Getting outside gets you out of your head, off the devices, and into real life.
2 | Move. We all know people who exercise are healthier, happier, more successful, and so on and so on. When we listen to our bodies and move in ways we enjoy, we show our bodies and ourselves love and everything functions better – physically, mentally, and spiritually.
3 | Be selective about who you spend time with. Protecting your energy and thoughts from people who push their anger, drama, or stress onto you or bring out the worst in you is important. This doesn’t mean you’re judgmental or unloving towards them. It simply means you choose to spend your time with people who lift you up, inspire you, and make you better instead.
4 | Make time to be still. It could be through meditation, reading, journaling, whatever. Making time to just be brings you into the present, allows you to connect to your truth, and allows everything else to melt away for a few moments.
5 | Allow yourself to dream. I think our dreams – our real, deep-seated dreams that we feel in our bones- are inklings from our soul that we need to pay attention to. It’s something greater moving and working through us. Dreaming allows us to be excited, feel inspired, and even develop our work ethic because we want it so bad. Plus, it’s fun!
6 | Be kind. Giving to others, helping someone out, saying something kind, encouraging another, or even smiling at a stranger don’t only do something for the other person – they also make you feel really, really good. It taps into our inner connectedness.
7 | Love yourself. When we accept ourselves the way we are, love ourselves, and are kind to ourselves, it affects every other aspect of our life. It’s so not easy and is a constant practice, but it’s quintessential to our happiness.
8 | Express gratitude. I’m not sure if it’s possible to be truly happy if you’re not grateful for what exists in your life. Focusing on what is good and what we’re grateful for always feels good. And it brings forth more of it because what we focus on, expands.
9 | Remember that happiness comes from within. We have to choose and practice happiness. We have to do the inner work to peel back layers, let go of limiting beliefs, release attachments and expectations, forgive ourselves and others, and find the peace and happiness that already exist within us. Sure, external things can add to our happiness, but true, lasting happiness can only be found inside ourselves. We all have it.
Now go out and be happy!
